Ft Pickens
This historical barracks building was built in the late 1800's for Civil War soldiers. It is located on Gulf Islands National Seashore, Santa Rosa Island. The building was built in the shape of a "T" with the center being 76 feet long and the main section being 200 feet long. When Hurricane Ivan hit Pensacola in 2005, the force of the storm separated the two sections and washed them apart approximately 120 feet. Miraculously there was minimum structural damage as most of the (6) chimneys stayed intact. DJHM loaded both pieces and rolled them back together and dug and installed a new foundation. While digging the new footers, cannon ball buttons from civil war uniforms and Indian head pennies were recovered. The only road to the end of the island was destroyed by the Hurricane, so all of our equipment had to be hauled by a front-end loader and 4-wheel drive vehicles for several miles through the sand.
